How to turn a calling into a profitable business

Philip and Natasha moved to Petersburg from the Far East.

Viktor Sikirin

spoke to business founders

They paint walls in offices and earn 300 thousand rubles a month. Here is their story.

How did you come up with the idea

Philip and Natasha from Blagoveshchensk, Amur Region. Philip studied as an economist, Natasha - as an artist-designer.

Since the age of 14, Philip has been engaged in graffiti: he paints with spray paint from spray cans. At 17, he took the first orders - he painted walls in clubs, shops and apartments. After university, I decided to go into this field.

There are no prospects for a graffiti artist and designer in Blagoveshchensk. In 2014, Philip and Natasha got married and moved to St. Petersburg to look for work. Natasha got a job as an interior designer, and Philip began to work for himself.

Nobody in the city knew the young man, he did not have a suitable portfolio. Philip looked for orders on the forums, posted ads on Avito and left ads on the pavement. It happened that people called and asked to draw them not graffiti, but the same advertisement on the pavement. Orders did not bring pleasure and big profits, but they allowed me to train and replenish my portfolio.

Gradually, clients appeared who ordered the painting of offices, restaurants and clubs. In 2016, Philip opened an individual entrepreneur for 5,000 rubles. The number of orders grew, so Natasha quit and joined her husband. The company was named "Design NF".

Portfolio

Without a good portfolio, there are no orders. At first, Philip took on any task - even those that did not require creativity and special skill. For the last three years, Philip and Natasha have been working only with projects that are of interest to them.

In 2014, Philip won a tender for painting 50 m² of the Tinkoff Bank office. The main prize was not money, but a MacBook. But after the competition, large orders appeared - customers saw that Philip was trusted by the bank. The painting of the office was ordered by the University of Online Professions "Netology", the restaurant "Marketplace" and hotels in St. Petersburg. In 2016, Tinkoff Bank ordered Philip to paint the main office on Golovinsky Highway. Now they are painting a dozen bank offices in different cities of Russia.

Clients and promotion

"Design NF" is invited to paint offices, restaurants, hotels and clubs. Guys rarely take on small projects - they take energy, but bring little output. Philip and Natasha will undertake to paint the apartment only by acquaintance.

In 2016, friends made a new website for Philip and Natasha for free. It is easy to navigate, there is a feedback form and reviews, the general scheme and working conditions are spelled out.

To show the finished work, our heroes take pictures of the result. If the order and shooting conditions are simple, they take pictures themselves. When you need professional equipment (for example, a wide-angle lens) or video, they order professionals. A video about the project costs 20 thousand rubles, photos - 5-10 thousand.

An example of a video that the guys are making - the design of the main office of Tinkoff Bank

Negotiations and signing of the contract

Design NF does not have an office - there is enough apartment for preparatory work, and negotiations are carried out by phone and via the Internet. At first, the order is simply discussed: the client talks about the task and asks the price. It is impossible to say the exact cost of the work at this stage, but it is important to discuss the minimum price in advance. Sometimes Philip and Natasha came to the site, took measurements, and then it turned out that the client did not have money for the project.

If the order is small or in another city, the guys ask the customer to photograph and measure the room. If it is large or complex, they go to the object themselves. Walls are measured on the spot and the final price is called. It includes the development of sketches, the manufacture of stencils for drawing, the work itself, materials and accommodation for the children, if the project is not in St. Petersburg or Moscow.

90 000 R

the guys received for painting the office of the online education center

Payments are divided into 3 parts. After signing the contract, the client pays 20% of the cost - this is an advance for the development of a sketch. When the sketch is ready - 40% for materials, another 40% - after the completion of work.

The painting costs 2-6 thousand rubles per square meter. The price depends on the volume and complexity of the order. The minimum order in St. Petersburg will cost 15 thousand rubles, in Moscow - 30 thousand (including travel and accommodation costs). The average order - two small walls and meeting rooms - 100 thousand rubles.

Design NF has a standard contract that sets out the terms of work. Almost every time, the client's lawyers try to change something: the wording, the number of sketch options, the timing of revisions, work and payments. The larger the customer, the more paperwork. If they order a large office, they make up a bunch of small contracts for each floor or wall.

Warranty for painting - 2 years. The paint can be washed, it does not fade in the sun and does not crumble. Sometimes the customer's employees accidentally spoil the drawing, for example, scratch it. If this happens, Philip comes and fixes the matter for an additional fee, if something minor - for free. In this case, the guys keep stencils for several months - suddenly they have to correct something.

Wall painting does not require special papers and permits. Sometimes customers ask for a paint certificate - this is necessary to comply with fire safety. The guys take it in the store when they buy materials.

How sketches are made

Before the start, Philip and Natasha draw a sweep and a conditional floor plan. It shows in proportions what size the walls are, how high the ceiling is, where the windows, doors, TV and cooler are. This is necessary so that the drawing harmoniously fits into the wall, and does not look like a stain.

When they come up with a concept, they take into account the history of the company, its policies, values and corporate colors. Communicate with the customer, find out his wishes and goals. Some want the drawings to be creative, others need rigor.

After they make sketches - preliminary sketches. Natasha draws sketches by hand, then redraws them on the computer using a graphics tablet. In digital form, it is more convenient to work with a sketch: you can change the scale and color or send it to the customer.

A sketch is a finished drawing that remains to be transferred to the wall. Often other artists make too rough sketches or simply use photographs for layouts. The sketch and implementation are different, and customers are unhappy. Philip and Natasha immediately make a drawing, which is then exactly transferred to the wall.

When there are a lot of orders and work, there is not enough time for everything. Then the guys order to transfer the drawing from graphic format to vector or to correct something for freelance illustrators. Payment is fixed, depending on the task and the budget of the project - from 2 to 40 thousand rubles.

When the sketches are ready, they are approved by the customer. If he likes everything, he signs the act of acceptance.

How to create stencils

Typically, interior artists paint rooms with brushes and water-based paints. This is laborious for artists and inconvenient for the customer - painting one wall takes up to 2 weeks. The office is crowded with strangers, there is a smell of paint everywhere.

Philip works in stencil technique. This is when a stencil is cut out of paper, plastic or film, according to which a drawing is made. The stencil allows you to achieve fine detail and similarity with the sketch - you can’t draw it by hand with a spray can.

1000 R

Philippe pays the printing house for a meter of stencil

Philip makes small and simple stencils himself. He highlights with a projector a sketch on whatman paper or glued sheets of paper, traces the outline and cuts out what happened. She creates stencils from paper, drawing paper, plastic (PET) film, plastic, cardboard and self-adhesive film. For commercial orders, he uses only whatman paper and self-adhesive film.

Creating a stencil is a monotonous job. Once Philip carved it for two weeks in a row. Now our hero is ordering large and complex stencils from a printing house. There they are cut out by a special plotter machine on a self-adhesive film. It costs 500-1000 rubles per meter, but it saves whole weeks. Self-adhesive film has only one drawback - it is disposable. If necessary, at any time you can cut the same in the printing house. Paper and plastic stencils are used many times.

Paints and materials

For graffiti use aerosol paint in cans. Philip buys it in paint stores with a 10-13% discount for regular customers. A can of paint costs 300 rubles, it is enough for 1 m². Philip buys professional Spanish and German brands: "Montana", "MTN 94" and "Arton" - they dry and look better than others.

Spray paint has a strong smell. If they have to work in an existing office, the guys buy Tikkurila and Little Green water-dispersion or acrylic paints with color and paint with brushes and rollers. Sometimes gold leaf and other exotic materials are used if the client wants something special.

300 R

costs a can of paint. It is enough for 1 m²

Philip and Natasha buy materials for a specific project. They try not to take anything with a margin - there is nowhere to store the cans. No matter how the guys plan, it still remains superfluous. The shelf life of the cylinder is 5-12 years, so they are not thrown away. Now Philip and Natasha have two hundred cans of paint at home.

In addition to paint, you need paper and plastic for the stencil, self-adhesive, mounting and stencil films (to glue the stencil around the perimeter), a film to cover walls and furniture, and respirators. 30-40% of the project cost is spent on materials.

How to draw a drawing

It takes 2-3 days to paint 10 m². Guys rarely work at one facility for more than a week.

In order not to stain anything, everything is pasted over and covered with a film. After work, they clean up all the rubbish.

Our heroes have learned to search and work with illustrators, but not yet with artists. They tried to hire four artists with good portfolios and experience, but were not satisfied. There was a lot of explaining and redoing. For example, one artist mixed paint with color in the wrong proportions. Because of this, on the night before the opening of the object, the putty with a layer of paint peeled off. Philip and Natasha spent the whole night puttying and redrawing graffiti.

Field work

Most orders come from St. Petersburg and Moscow. In Moscow, for the duration of the project, the guys rent a hotel or an apartment on Airbnb close to the object. Once it was possible to work only on weekends - the guys went to Moscow for several Fridays in a row.

The cost of painting 1 m² for both cities is usually the same - from 2000 rubles. The guys pay for tickets and hotels themselves, and in order not to lose money, they simply do not take small projects in the capital. In the regions, the cost of 1 m² is set higher, because to go farther. The amount includes the cost of logistics and accommodation. It is convenient for the client - he pays one general check.

Painting is business entertainment, not an initial need. It is ordered by established companies: to impress customers or entertain employees. In the regions, almost no one needs painting of offices. Those who think about it are not ready to pay for quality and art - the works of local artists are enough for them.

If the stencils are large, Philip delivers them with a transport company. In Moscow and St. Petersburg there are no problems with paint - Philip buys it on the spot. In Ryazan, Kazan or Rostov-on-Don, paint was ordered from specialized stores in advance.

What difficulties do they face

There are agencies, studios and freelancers on the market.

Agencies work as intermediaries - they find clients and hire artists for a project. Philip and Natasha have many offers from agencies, but they refuse them. Agencies often offer banal ideas or deceive the customer: they increase the cost of work, use the portfolio of well-known artists, and invite more budget ones to work.

Works are often stolen from "Design NF" and pass them off as their own. Once the agency sent the guys a proposal for cooperation, in which they indicated the works of Philip and Natasha as their own.

The guys often have to redraw after other artists. Once they were already the fourth performers. Every detail was important to the customer, and she was dissatisfied with previous works.

300 000 R

Phillip and Natasha earn on average per month

Many clients still do not perceive art as an expensive investment, and Philip and Natasha as adult professionals. In the mass consciousness, graffiti artists are teenagers who will do everything for a penny. Often it does not even occur to clients that this can be done professionally and take good money for the work.

Results and plans

After purchasing materials, paying for the road, accommodation, freelance labor and taxes, the guys are left with 30-50% of the project cost. The average net profit per month is 300 thousand rubles for two.

For the last year and a half, Philip and Natasha are constantly busy, they always have clients. Recently, the guys received the largest order in their practice - for painting 3,000 m² in twelve offices of Tinkoff Bank, of which four have already been painted.

To be able to create a good mood for people, making high-quality murals in the interior - this must be learned. The profession of a wall painting artist is relevant today. Wall painting in the interior and exterior is becoming the same reality as the presence of a furniture wall with crystal in every decent family in Soviet times.

To change the style from the notorious floral wallpaper and furniture wall in the interior, as well as to paint the walls in cafes, shops, thus increasing the flow of visitors, a wall painting specialist will help.

muralist- it sounds proud. That is the name of the painter who draws a three-dimensional picture on the wall. Education should start with examples of great masters: Giovanni Battista Tiepolo, Henryk Semiradsky, Viktor Vasnetsov, Michelangelo - these and other artists worked in the genre of monumental art.

If you decide to hire a wall painting artist, you need to descend from heaven to earth and carefully study the issue. Some pitfalls in ordering wall painting:

There are times when an artist shows other people's paintings

The portfolio shown by the invited specialist does not include his own projects. This can happen to both individuals and firms. As a result, you choose the perfect, from your point of view, version of the painting, and the artist cannot cope with it.

Painting on the wall is not buying a finished painting, and you can only believe the creator with a voluminous portfolio.

Check option:

  • study well the company or the reputation of the private trader with whom you are going to conclude an agreement. Invite him to draw a sketch himself directly at your home. In theory, the wall painting artist is required to make a sketch for the entire wall. In practice, this is not done: too expensive, and additional consumption of paint and materials. Usually a small sketch is drawn.
  • more credible are those portfolios where the artist captured his work in stages: a sketch, drawing on the wall, elaboration of details. Since creative work is about inspiration, some artists may simply forget to do it. However, it is useful for promotion and further dialogue with the customer.

History reference: the customers of the great Tiepolo, the Italian dukes and archbishops, subjected his skill in his youth to a thorough check. At first, the artist himself studied with Veronese and his "portfolio" included sketches of his work. As a token of gratitude, he depicted customers in his paintings.

Wall painting can be done by another master

Nobody wants to see an apprentice instead of a master. After the conclusion of the contract, if you were satisfied with the master, his reputation and reviews about him, other performers may appear to fulfill the order. Students of various art schools and colleges are actively working under the hyped masters. Typically, such a picture is observed in early-ripening firms, where there is a large turnover of personnel.

Check option:

Specify and write down in the contract who will execute the order. It is possible to allow the division of work: the main painting is done by the master, small works and decorations are done by his students. You have the right to demand the presence of the master and his control even over minor works.

Bargaining after work is inappropriate

Even if you have concluded a written contract in accordance with all the rules, the result of the work may not satisfy you. An artist can always object to you: "I see it that way." Creative people sometimes have such problems. For example, the famous make-up artist and hairdresser Sergei Zverev could suddenly say to a client of his studio: “Sorry, I can’t see you today.” The master could not fulfill the whim of the client, and on another appointed day everything worked out.

It is the same with mural artists: you can disagree with him in assessing the work, and someone has to give in. Either you accept the work, or the artist corrects and corrects the painting. Not all staining techniques will endure a radical adjustment, and you can screw up the work. For example, acrylic paints dry quickly and the drawing immediately hardens. In time to correct it will work with oil.

Check option:

  • All material issues must be resolved before work begins. Bargaining is appropriate at the beginning, before ordering;
  • a sketch of the work is usually attached to the contract - paintings on the wall;
  • it is useful to be present from time to time, observing the work of the master and his team. Of course, at the same time, do not stand above your soul and not bother: anyone can offend an artist.

In choosing an artist for painting walls, as in art, you need to catch the golden mean. The dumping prices of one-day firms will not inspire confidence, but not everyone is ready to pay millions for a painting on the bathroom wall. Usually, small orders are taken reluctantly, both in residential premises and in stores.

Here are the approximate prices for the services of artists in one of the firms:

  • Wall painting prices start at 980 rubles per square meter.
  • The minimum order value is only 15,000 rubles.
  • Development of sketches - the first three are free, for one or two walls.
  • Departure of the expert on object for consultation free of charge.
  • Ceiling painting +25% to the cost.
  • Prices in each company are placed in the table, but a discount is provided for a large area.

At the same time, practically any styles: Antiquity, Middle Ages, Baroque and Rococo, Renaissance, Classicism, Empire. Artists will also cope with French Art Nouveau, Art Nouveau, gradient painting, pop art from synthetic colors. The loft will be painted using multi-color abstractions and three-dimensional painting.

There is also a revival on the site of the construction tender: at the time of viewing, 6 applications for wall painting in the interior of the house and shops, graffiti to order from 999 rubles are in progress. per m². Minimum price order for graffiti from 7 thousand rubles.

At the same time, the price calculation always takes into account the complexity of the painting, the area of \u200b\u200bthe pattern (the larger the volume, the lower the price) and special conditions:

  • drawing at height (ordering scaffolding required),
  • the urgency of the painting, the execution after school (night) time,
  • remoteness of the object from the city center.

Of course, whether or not to invite an artist to paint the walls is everyone's business, you can be content with printed "frescoes".

As Paul Cezanne said, "Art is a corner of nature, visible through a certain temperament." If the art of drawing enters your home, it will become the same corner, sweet for the heart and soul.

All creative success!

Today, the author's professional painting on the walls and ceiling is already a brand. An artist-designer who undertakes to perform this delicate, extremely laborious and complex work must be fluent in many ways of drawing a picture. The master performs painting using traditional techniques, his experience, personal intuition, as well as modern materials and innovative developments.

As a result, a completely unique design is formed in a room of any purpose, emphasizing the individuality of its owner and giving originality and originality to the entire interior as a whole.

Wall painting indoors

Modern owners of country houses, dachas, city apartments, cottages, as well as cafes and restaurants, company offices and various public facilities have the opportunity order art wall painting in Moscow by a professional graphic designer.

After the work carried out, the interior of any room acquires unusually bright living features, special charisma, recognition and originality. It becomes memorable, creative. Such a stunning effect is achieved thanks to the author's reading, professional implementation of ideas, skillful hands and skill of the artist.

The popularity of wall painting

As experience has shown, now creative painting confidently occupies a leading position among all other used options for the author's design of a room. This technique provides the designer with almost unlimited possibilities for the realization of any ideas.

Attention! It is not at all necessary to use the drawing on purely vertical surfaces (walls). If you want something more, then you can show your imagination and completely transform the interior by painting any available surface with beautiful drawings.

The main thing in the work of an artist-designer is the compatibility of the chosen style with the general concept of the room. Of course, only a professional with sufficient work experience and relevant education can take into account all the available nuances.

It is impossible to paint the walls according to video tutorials on the Internet on your own. If a person does not have skills, is not familiar with modern techniques, did not hold brushes in his hands and did not work with paints, he will not be able to create even the simplest drawing. Amateur work always looks unprofessional.

As for the usual traditional renovation, even the use of the highest quality materials and techniques will never make the design exclusive. That is why now the author's painting has gained such high popularity. People value not a stereotyped approach, but individuality and strive to have something that others do not have.

A true professional who values his reputation, respects the desire of the owners of the premises to search for harmony, the expression of their individuality and the desire to get a good result. When there is an interaction between the artist and the owners of a house or apartment, their understanding of each other, then in the end the created image makes a stunning impression on the viewer.

This is real creativity. It was also done by the great artists of the past, who left a rich legacy to mankind in the form of masterpieces that are still admired by millions of people.

In this sense, modern masters of painting have taken over from them. But if in those days such orders were available only to the noble and rich, now any person who appreciates art can become the owner of a creative author's design.

In children's rooms there is a huge potential for expressing the rich imagination inherent in children of any age. Kids like cartoon and comic characters, images of animals and birds, fairy-tale castles, a magical forest. Teenagers prefer to see in the room images of superheroes saving the world from alien invasion, drawings of cars, graffiti, anime, abstractions, space.

Parents should take into account the wishes of the child, his hobbies at a given time, age, gender, character. It should be remembered that the final choice is always with the small or large owner of the room. Discussing a future project is a very delicate topic that requires wisdom, patience and understanding. Do not rudely impose your opinion on children. If the choice of the child seems unsuccessful, you should discuss all the details together, unobtrusively point out possible mistakes, find a compromise and never go against your will.

Thematic painting
A modern artist has to create a huge number of thematic drawings. Art painting of the walls. Stages of working with an artist

In order for the work to be carried out at a high level and not to cause a lot of worries to the owners of the apartment or office, an action plan is drawn up in advance. Clear planning of all stages and their preliminary discussion with the customer is an integral part of the artist's work. The master starts creating the painting only after agreeing with the customer on the sketch, discussing all the details, selecting and purchasing materials and preparing the surface.

Step one

The customer and the artist in a conversation find out how the owner of the premises wants to see the interior design. This is a fundamental step necessary to obtain a quality end result that will satisfy all parties.

The task is to determine the taste preferences of the future owner of the author's painting. The artist must inspect the room, analyze the features of its configuration and lighting, clarify the situation regarding the style and color orientation of the future interior.

The master can offer his ideas, suggest successful options, taking into account all the available nuances, natural and artificial lighting, wall decoration and much more.

At this stage, the indicative painting cost.

step two

The artist is creating sketches of the future image. You can perform several options for the customer to approve the drawing that he liked the most. Necessary changes can be made to the selected sketch if the client is interested in them. Only when the customer has fully decided, the artist can start work, since from that moment the sketch is already considered approved.

Step Three

The necessary materials are purchased. Then the master is engaged in the preliminary preparation of the walls and / or ceiling.

Step Four

The artist begins to paint (decorate) the surface.

Information about wall painters

Each of us must at least once in his life saw beautifully executed drawings on the walls and admired the skill of the artists. However, if earlier airbrushing was considered an art from the underground, unprofessional, now it is beginning to develop as a separate design direction. Every artist who specializes in mural knows how important it is to think over a sketch, to correlate the image with the general building, to be able to combine beautiful design with the transmission of a message to the viewer, to create a certain atmosphere.

Wall painting by the artist Aron Honore - the wonderful world of images

Acrylic wall painting in Moscow from the artist Aron Honore is an amazing world of visual images, unique in their artistic performance and design idea. Vast experience in this field helped to create a special drawing technique, which immediately distinguishes the work of Aron Honore's studio from the work of other studios. This is, first of all, the hyperrealism of the image - it seems as if the artist was able to stop time by capturing one of the moments on the wall. This is exactly the case when the walls begin to "talk". But hyper-realistic drawing is far from all that is in his arsenal: there are many techniques and styles with which you can bring the most unusual fantasy to life. Wall painting artist Aron Honore does not work by himself, but has created his own studio, where a very talented and creative team helps him create beauty.

Wall painting techniques

Many of the artist's works can be seen on the site: both photos of ready-made images and in the process of work. In general, many years of experience and love for wall painting allowed Aron Honore not only, as already described earlier, to develop his own style and technique, but also to minimize the time of work: the accuracy and coherence of the process is important when designing, for example, private apartments. And the use of only high-quality materials and paints makes these paintings completely safe for children.

Professional airbrushing can already be seen not only in Moscow, but also in other cities of Russia. Artistic wall painting in Moscow by the artist Aron Honore has already become known among connoisseurs of unique interior design. Perhaps the most important thing for any customer is that the drawing, on the one hand, fully corresponds to the order, and on the other hand, that the artist brings his skill to it. The wall painting turns out to be amazing, which can be said not only about complex hyper-realistic works, but also about simple drawings on the walls.
