What are people called who meditate? What is meditation and what is it for: a short overview of a practitioner

2016-02-13 Ruslan Tsvirkun

Hello, dear readers! Ruslan Tsvirkun is with you, and today we’ll talk about the harm and dangers of meditation. In my personal experience there have been no negative consequences, although I have been meditating for over 10 years. But I have seen several such cases, and also read a lot about it on the English-language Internet. Sometimes it happens that myths are passed off as reality, so I will try to be as objective as possible, give examples from my life and dispel some prejudices.

I don't want to scare beginners who are just starting to learn the basics. Therefore, before talking about the dangers of meditation, I recommend reading 2 articles about the benefits:

I will also make one clarification:

By following simple precautions, you can easily avoid unwanted consequences.

Rule 1. Don't go too far

There is no need to jump straight into the pool headlong and meditate for several hours a day. It's like in sports. If a physically unprepared person starts training on the first day of training the same way as a professional athlete, then most likely he will tear his muscles. It’s almost the same with meditation. You need to start with small steps, devoting 10-15 minutes a day to this. You can read more about this in my article “”.

Rule 2. Choose the techniques that suit you

There are a huge number of meditation techniques, but not all of them are suitable for modern people. Some meditations were developed for life in difficult conditions, for example, in a forest or cave, and some specifically for renounced monks. There are also different schools of philosophy that set themselves different goals to which meditation should lead. Therefore, if you suddenly feel that some technique is not suitable for you, then it is better not to practice it. All people are individual, one thing suits some, another suits others. Choose meditations that are right for you.

Rule 3. Watch yourself

Below I will describe some possible negative effects of meditation. There are no irreversible effects; all this can be tracked if you listen to yourself and periodically observe yourself from the outside. If you notice that this is beginning to manifest itself in you, then working on yourself will help you extinguish unwanted manifestations.

Types of negative consequences of meditation

Asceticism and hermitage

Some people who engage in self-development and meditation become so carried away by the process that they begin to imitate great ascetics, yogis, and saints. They leave family and work, arguing that worldly attachments prevent them from developing spiritually. I think this is not right, especially for family people. It will be much more beneficial if such a person helps his family become enlightened than leaving them to their fate to do it alone. Most often this is caused by false enthusiasm, and it ends as quickly as it appeared.

It may be easier to meditate as a hermit; in past eras this was really the only option. But is the easiest path the right one? Here it is still worth arguing which is easier.

I once read a parable that fits this theme. One “enlightened” person said: “I got rid of attachments, now I will leave everything and go to a monastery.” After some time, when he settled down in the monastery, returning from a meal, he saw another monk sitting under a tree he loved. Then he exclaimed; “Go away! This is my place for meditation."

One of the main goals achieved through meditation is getting rid of the sense of ownership. But even if you drop everything and go into the forest, this does not at all guarantee that attachments will disappear.

Renunciation and asceticism are the result of our practice, but not the means. It is impossible, with the help of dry renunciation, to leave all attachments without acquiring in return the highest taste.

I, too, at one time, in search of truth, left my father’s house and went to travel, lived for several years in monasteries and ashrams. Studied the intricacies of meditation and spiritual science in India. You can read my story on the author page.

But I do not believe that this was the harm that the practice of meditation brought me. On the contrary, it was a huge benefit for me. As a result of such searches, my internal values were formed, I found my path and build my life with the principles that I learned and deeply absorbed.

It is not at all necessary to repeat what others do. Everyone is individual.

Depression and mental disorders from meditation

Meditation in itself cannot be a source of depression, much less mental disorders. It’s just that when a person stops the flow of thoughts and opens the door to his subconscious, he can learn about hidden motives, feelings and desires that can upset and even frighten him. It's like looking into a dark closet filled with various rubbish, the bizarre shadows of which excite the mind and make goosebumps run down the skin. But as soon as you open the window and let the sunlight in, your fears will immediately dissipate. There is no need to fight our nature and suppress what is inherent to us. Study your qualities, shed light on your hidden fears.

It is because of the fear of getting to know themselves better that many people try to immerse themselves in business and everyday problems, devote a large amount of time to TV or the Internet, and some even become addicted to alcohol or drugs.

Another reason why critics claim that meditation is harmful and causes depression is that some people give it up halfway through. I have had a couple of people come to me who had lost confidence in themselves due to several unsuccessful attempts to practice meditation. They expressed thoughts like this: “This is not for me. I am too mundane and far from spiritual growth. I haven’t succeeded and I won’t succeed.” If you, dear reader, have such doubts, then I hasten to reassure you, I also don’t succeed in everything the first time. To achieve success in any field, training and practice are necessary, meditation is no exception.

Manifestation of bad qualities

During meditation, you may notice very low thoughts and desires in your mind. And sometimes it comes out. And you might think that before, before we started practicing, we were better and didn’t have anything like that in our heads. But it is not so. Imagine a quiet, calm pond, and at first glance it may seem very clean. But as soon as you take a stick and start muddying the bottom with it, dirt and other impurities begin to float to the surface. It is not difficult to assume that it was all there, and did not appear from somewhere outside. Likewise, our subconscious deeply stores various imprints within itself. When we start to look into it, it reveals to the surface all the dirt that has accumulated there. There is only one way out - just continue to practice. All the dirt will float to the surface and then go away forever, unless of course we try to hold it back.

Story from ancient Vedic texts Srimad Bhagavatam:

Many thousands of years ago, demigods and demons churned the ocean of milk to obtain nectar, the elixir of immortality. And before the nectar appeared, various things floated to the surface. And at one moment a poison appeared that could fill the entire ocean. The participants in this event were scared and did not know what to do. They prayed to higher powers. And then the great Shiva appeared. He drank all this poison, thereby saving everyone. Since then, Shiva has had a blue stripe on his neck, which reminds of this event.

So in our life, starting to churn our Mind, in the process of this all the dirt will surely come up, and just as Shiva removed the poison at the request of the demigods and demons, so we will have to prove by our determination the desire to cleanse ourselves of poison and turn to God with a request help overcome these obstacles on the path of spiritual self-improvement.

Dramatic changes in life

When a person begins to engage in meditation and self-development, of course, changes occur in his life. His values and worldview change, his horizons expand, bad habits disappear, and they are replaced by useful, interesting hobbies. Of course, such drastic changes will bring changes to a person’s entire way of life. His circle of friends, job, etc. may change.

Let's consider this example. A man who loved to drink with friends and have fun began to practice meditation and pursue spiritual growth. Over time, he lost interest in drinking, and assessing his drinking companions with a sober gaze, he will most likely come to the conclusion that it is time to change something. He may try to inspire his friends to engage in spiritual practices and give up bad habits, but most likely he will not succeed. Drinkers will simply stop communicating with him, and he will find himself a company of like-minded people.

It would seem that what’s wrong with life changing for the better? For a conscious person this is good, but those around him who are not awakened may not like such changes.

Let me give you an example. One of my friends told me that she started meditating to quickly restore her energy, because she was very tired at work and could no longer cope with her responsibilities. Meditation led to an unexpected result: she realized that her colleagues were taking advantage of her gentleness and shifting part of their work to her. She learned to refuse, and her relationships with coworkers deteriorated. But my friend did not despair, especially since her real friends supported such personality changes in her. Her work productivity improved, and after some time she became the head of this department.

As I said above, there have also been dramatic changes in my life. I completely restructured my lifestyle and direction in life. I can’t say that I actually gave up anything, since there wasn’t really anything to give up. Yes, I have a degree in economics, I worked in several large companies, but it was not my thing. I didn’t really have time to make a career there when I decided that I wasn’t going to do it at all. I had a choice: turn my life into a routine, or do what I love and develop in the direction that brings me happiness and pleasure. I chose the second option. Not everyone supported me in this decision, but the choice was mine. I don’t regret it one bit, but I thank God for giving me the strength and intelligence to do just that.

Feeling superior

Another possible negative effect of meditation is the so-called “guru syndrome.” By engaging in spiritual practices, a person reveals his abilities and comprehends much knowledge that is inaccessible to the average person. Because of this, some people have a feeling of superiority over others.

As a rule, such consequences of meditation can occur after a year of daily practice. At this time, it is very important to monitor whether you have developed a feeling of arrogance and superiority. If this is exactly the case, then work on this quality as soon as possible, otherwise all your work and efforts may be in vain. Because such a state stops the process of spiritual development, and then a decline occurs.

One of the main purposes of meditation is to discover divine, absolute love within oneself, and this is not compatible with a sense of superiority. After all, loving parents do not consider themselves better than their children just because they are wiser. Don't find fault or despise people for their shortcomings and weaknesses, rather help them grow to your level.

In defense of meditation

Finally, I would like to add that you should not avoid meditation just because the effects described above may occur. There are no less dangers in everyday life. At least take watching TV and using the Internet. Other people's ideas are put into your head, unnecessary goals and desires are imposed on you, which advertisers and PR managers worked on. In this case, meditation can help clear your mind of the false and leave the true.

The word "meditate" has an Indo-European basis - the ancient Indian "samadhi", which describes the final state of meditation, the psychophysical state of tranquil wakefulness. The later meaning goes back to the ancient Greek word "medomai", which means "I reflect", and ultimately to the Latin "meditari" - "to reflect", "to turn to oneself".

Nowadays, the Western equivalent, “trance,” is quite firmly entrenched in popular science literature. In addition, a similar concept known from medieval philosophical treatises as “contemplation” or “self-contemplation” can be used as a synonym for meditation.

The state of meditation is a state of going beyond the limits of the mind, which is caused and occurs in a certain sequence of psychophysiological acts that add up to a single, holistic and continuous process. The primary stage in all variants of practice is for the meditator to achieve a state of relaxation, reduced sensitivity to external objects, and detachment from them.

For all meditative practices, characteristic features can be identified: stopping the mind, detachment from everything extraneous that is not related to the object of meditation. As soon as attention is distracted, the meditator must, by a voluntary effort of will, return it to the object. Gradually, as you practice, interference becomes less and less distracting.

Regardless of the ideological background, meditation practitioners learn to control and manage their minds and their emotions, which leads to improved memory and attention.

Meditating is as natural as breathing!

At the birth of a person, the doctor, in order for the child to scream and take the first breath, must lightly spank him, and then breathing no longer needs to be controlled - the person simply breathes to live, he cannot live without it. The same thing happens with meditation, only life itself acts as a doctor. She will lightly “slap” an adult who is already quite reasonable in his self-image, and he will suddenly understand that meditation is a natural process, absolutely necessary for a normal and fulfilling life. There is no need to make something mysterious out of meditation, to see magic in it. The ability to meditate is an innate human property. Every person knows how to meditate, they just forgot how to do it.

Stress is a big problem of our time

In life, a person does not know how to relax, as a result he constantly experiences stress. For a person who does not know how to meditate, the only way to relieve tension and stress is through illness.

People exposed to physical and mental stress need compensation: relaxation instead of tension, calmness instead of fuss. If someone cannot relax, he constantly feels like a twisted clockwork spring. A lack of relaxation kills more people today than anything else. The ability to deeply relax is the most important pillar of a healthy, fulfilling life. The only question is how to achieve it. Meditation is a simple solution!

Modern research on stress has led to the conclusion that there are four main types of stress that make life difficult for people and harm their health.

Adverse environmental factors: noise, polluted air, heat or cold - all this leads to stress.

Ordinary irritations and conflicts, that is, “little things”, such as being late, unimportant disputes, long waits - all this is a “game on the nerves.” So-called critical life situations (great shocks and stress, for example, the death of someone close, divorce, long-term unemployment) cause stress because they knock a person out of his usual rut or require drastic changes in his life. True, your health is harmed not only by negative experiences, but also by situations that you usually consider positive, for example, your wedding or unusual achievements. This is due to the fact that any experience requires a thorough restructuring or reorientation that exceeds your physical capabilities.

Along with external life changes, people have expectationsand internal complaints to yourself or to the world around you: the need to enjoy the respect of each of the people around you or the conviction that you must delve into other people’s problems and difficulties.

Answering the question: “How do you cope with difficult situations, how do you express stress?”, people say that their blood pressure rises and they cannot “switch off” at night or on weekends, they often feel tired and “squeezed out”, various little things and comments irritate them so much that they practically drive them crazy for the whole day.

It is important to remember that any load, even minor and short-term, leads to physical changes that affect the activity of the whole organism. There are virtually no health problems that are not caused by stress to one degree or another.

Stress weakens the body's resistance, thus opening the door to disease and illness, and causes changes in the autonomic nervous system, hormonal glands and metabolism.

Processing stress

Stress is the cause of numerous diseases. These include peptic ulcers of the stomach and duodenum, cardiovascular diseases (hypertension, high cholesterol in the blood, heart attack), chronic headaches, muscle cramps with subsequent ailments of the spine, allergies, various skin diseases and cancer.

Stress also affects the mental state, causing feelings of fear, depression, internal anxiety and agitation, and aggressiveness. Therefore, the strength to resist inevitable stress and reduce preventable stress are crucial for maintaining health. To take a break from daily stress, deep relaxation is necessary.

Vacations, walks, fishing, which in former times completely satisfied people, are no longer enough to effectively compensate for daily stress.

Meditation and health

Hypertension:

  • Hypertension is one of the most common cardiovascular diseases. Experts agree that mental factors can also cause high blood pressure. With an excited state, physical or mental stress, blood pressure increases. If blood pressure is constantly elevated, the walls of blood vessels wear out and lose their elasticity. Meditation stimulates blood flow to various organs, dilates blood vessels and improves blood circulation. Thus, it creates the physical prerequisites for lowering blood pressure. Along with this, meditation has a direct effect on blood pressure, reducing it.

Heart diseases:

  • Diseases of the coronary vessels of the heart are as widespread as hypertension.

In addition to physical risk factors (high blood cholesterol, diabetes, obesity, sedentary lifestyle, smoking and high blood pressure), the influence of mental factors has recently been recognized.

Meditation has proven itself to be effective in treating cardiac arrhythmias that are widespread today, expressed, for example, by increased or intermittent heartbeat or an uneven pulse. Since these cardiac ailments of a nervous nature usually resort to sedatives, it is not surprising that the alleviation of these disorders is easily achieved through physical relaxation through the harmonizing effects of meditation.

Headache:

  • Chronic headaches in 95% of cases are caused by mental causes. Meditation, as shown by the results of various studies, allows you to relieve muscle tension in the frontal, occipital areas and in the shoulder girdle. Headaches caused by overstraining the muscles of the head, neck and shoulder girdle completely disappear. For migraines, meditation can significantly reduce the consumption of painkillers and reduces the frequency of migraines, increasing overall resistance to stress.

Asthma:

  • In recent years, the number of respiratory diseases has increased significantly.

The lungs function differently after meditation. The amount of air exhaled per minute and the maximum amount of air exhaled per exhalation have increased, and airway blockage has decreased. The positive effect of meditation on patients with asthma is explained by the fact that, firstly, it helps relieve stress and overcome fear, has a relaxing effect on the bronchial muscles, and secondly, due to a decrease in oxygen consumption during meditation, you need to inhale less air. These studies show that meditation techniques are a good addition to traditional asthma treatment.

Sleep disturbance:

  • A person spends about a third of his life sleeping. Over the past two decades, the number of sleep disorders has increased by approximately 300%. Together with sleep, the body is deprived of the most important possibility of physical regeneration and the ability to overcome conflicts. As a result, nervousness and imbalance grow, and there is a lack of energy, which also affects the sleep process.

Sometimes sleep disturbances are harbingers or accompaniments of various physical ailments, but in more than half of the cases they are caused by mental causes related to life circumstances. You know from your own experience how often, lying in bed at night, you cannot fall asleep, because you are oppressed by any worries, a feeling of growing anxiety, or your thoughts keep returning to the events of the past day. In most cases, sleep disturbances are associated with an inability to disconnect from current events.

Meditation is particularly well established as a natural remedy for sleep disorders. Meditation classes calm the sympathetic part of the autonomic nervous system, which is overstimulated by everyday stress. Cardiac activity and breathing calm down, muscles relax. The meditator learns to completely relax himself and “absorb” this relaxation. He is able to abstract himself from the events of the current day and is not subject to fears and anxieties. This is interesting.

    Physiologists have established:

    • Sleeping from 22:00 to 1:00 am is equal to six hours of rest;
    • Sleeping from 1:00 a.m. to 4:00 a.m. is equal to three hours of rest;
    • Sleeping from 4:00 to 7:00 in the morning is equal to an hour and a half of rest;
    • Daytime sleep or rest is beneficial, but should not exceed 0.5 hours
  • The discovered anti-cancer effect of meditation can be explained by the fact that a state of deep physiological rest mobilizes its own healing potencies, strengthens the immune system and has a general harmonizing effect on the body’s hormonal system. On a psychological level, the meditative state is associated with overcoming fear, stress, feelings of hopelessness and pessimism, as well as stimulating balance, composure and confidence.

Most cancer patients only find a way out of the impasse caused by the constant repetition of stressful situations when they learn to change their fundamental, most often negatively colored, expectations, life attitudes and thought patterns. Meditation supports patients on this difficult path, helping to fully develop the personality. A new way of thinking and the positive feelings that arise stimulate processes in the body that cause biochemical anti-cancer changes.

Alcohol consumption, nicotine and drugs:

  • The longer a person meditates, the less he smokes. Because of its natural nature, meditation represents a promising alternative to traditional smoking cessation treatments (such as chemicals). Its use does not present any problems, and it takes into account the psychological reasons for smoking, allowing the patient to achieve a pleasant state that serves as a “substitute” for the urgent, sometimes irresistible desire to grab a cigarette.

Meditation - helpfor depression:

  • According to the World Health Organization, today 3 5% of the population is susceptible to long-term depression, and women are much more likely than men. Every year, 100 to 150 million people suffer from depression. The number of depressive illnesses is growing. Among the reasons cited are: rapid social changes; unexpected changes in personal life, for example, the loss of a loved one, old age (age-related depression), the “struggle for survival” at school, university and at work.

At the physiological level, meditation reduces the effect of stress hormones that are produced in depressive states. The body naturally comes into a state of balance. In addition, it produces hormones such as endorphin, which accompanies internal satisfaction. Further, meditation relieves fatigue and has a refreshing effect, thus creating the prerequisites for preventing depression.

On a spiritual level, meditation helps resolve deep internal conflicts, which can be expressed, among other things, in anger, hostility, and chronic feelings of fear. This helps to gradually develop positive self-esteem. The meditator sees his life circumstances in a positive light and makes positive plans for the future.

Physical and mental injuries:

  • Meditation helps you learn to accept yourself as you are. The person begins to calm down internally. On this basis, he can fearlessly approach the solution of his difficulties with new mental attitudes. After a certain time, the meditator comes to deep spiritual and emotional changes.

Regular meditation practice leads to gradual and sustainable personal changes. Meditating patients learn to take responsibility for their condition and gain confidence in their ability to think and behave “normally.”

Meditation techniques are not only used to treat mental trauma. Their main value is that they cover all aspects of a comprehensiveidentity disclosure. The meditator's overall well-being improves and a different sense of life gradually develops. He learns to see himself in a more favorable light, and also to more clearly perceive the negative aspects of his personality, and is distinguished by positive life attitudes, which is associated with a radical change in thinking stereotypes.

Meditation not only leads to the development of thinking skills, but also stimulates non-linguistic abilities, such as intuition, as well as those that play an important role in interpersonal communication: openness, sociability and spontaneity.

Well-being is the basis for personal development

Meditation allows you to:

  • Develop self-confidence;
  • Be the way you want;
  • Treat yourself positively.

Development of intuition:

  • Intuition is inner vision, inspiration, irrefutable confidence. During intuitive discovery, insight occurs. Intuition forces you to act only in a certain way - it is simply impossible to do otherwise. The meditative state, especially for “beginners,” resembles a transitional stage from wakefulness to sleep. States in which mental activity is at rest contribute to intuitive discoveries.

Personal changes:

  • Meditation also develops the senses. The meditator begins to gradually perceive and express his feelings better.

Regular meditation not only eliminates negative personality traits, but also develops positive ones. Tolerance, sociability, sociability, relaxedness and openness are growing.

Meditation helps eliminate negative personality traits such as nervousness, shyness and imbalance, and stimulates positive traits such as self-confidence, self-esteem, openness and sociability. It stimulates not only mental functions, but also develops intuition.

Meditation, in addition, improves well-being, gradually develops positive thinking and teaches you to treat yourself better. It influences changes in fundamental life attitudes, which creates the basis for better treatment of other people. As a result, holistic development occurs. Meditation removes negative personality traits and develops positive ones.

Developed The transformation of personality through meditation does not happen from case to case, but sequentially, step by step. The following rule applies:The longer and more regularly a person meditates, the greater the changes he achieves.

Reducing drug use:

  • By drugs we also mean medications that have a sedative, analgesic or stimulant effect, which can also make a person addicted. Their impact is not as scandalous as consciousness-transforming substances, but these medications can lead to addiction in the same way, and the open number of people susceptible to this is very high.

By Since drug use and especially drug addiction are usually associated with mental problems and disorders, and meditation has a lasting positive effect on the individual, its therapeutic value in the treatment of drug addicts is obvious. It is a real alternative to drugs, satisfying the needs that serve as the main reason for their use, such as the desire to know yourself, expand the limits of your consciousness, achieve a better mood or find an effective means of overcoming stress and solving your problems.

Help Meditationatvarious health problems

Meditation methods help reduce cholesterol and blood sugar, get rid of excess weight, periodontal disease, and difficulties during pregnancy. Meditation also has a positive effect on psychosomatic diseases such as peptic ulcers of the stomach and duodenum, intestinal inflammations such as colitis, as well as arthritis, bronchitis, back pain, rheumatism and allergies. The breadth of the spectrum of meditation effects for diseases of the body is impressive. At the same time, it is not clear why modern medicine still treats meditation with such irritation.

Meditation not only serves to treat various diseases, but also to achieve good general health in which the physiological, mental and social aspects of the human personality are in harmonious balance. After all, health actually means the integrity of the individual!

In Sanskrit, one of the oldest languages, the word "swasthiya" was used to describe health. “Sva” means “one’s own self,” and “sthiya” can be roughly translated as “strongly built.” Based on this, health can be defined as firmly built in one’s own “I”. Knowing one's own “I” during meditation concerns all personal aspects: physiological, psychological and social in their entirety.

To maintain health, peace of mind is most important. Since meditation has a general effect on the formation of personality, and most diseases have mental causes, these personality changes also affect health. Most health-harming behavior patterns are caused by improper personality development.

Meditation is a method of self-education that is simple and easy to practice.

Meditation is not just a way to sit back with your eyes closed, but a serious technique that allows you to get rid of stress, get enough sleep faster, improve your mood and change the angle of perception of all the chaos that happens around us. Scientists continue to discover new positive properties of meditation. We will talk about those that are not yet so widely known in this article.

We are in website collected studies that reveal the effect of meditation from a new perspective.

1. Keeps the brain young

Negative age-related changes in the brain.

After age 20, the brain begins to age. Scientists from the University of California came to the conclusion that meditation for the brain is like an anti-aging face cream: it will not return you to a 20-year-old state and will not stop the aging process, but will help to better preserve gray matter for many years.

They studied the brain activity of two groups of people: the first included people who do not meditate, the second included those who have been practicing it for more than 20 years. People from the second group preserved their brains better as they aged than people from the first group. Participants who meditated had greater gray matter volume in all parts of the brain.

Yes, older meditators lost brain volume compared to younger participants in the first group, but their age-related brain loss was not as pronounced as that of non-meditators.

2. Improves student achievement

Scientists from the University of California conducted an experiment at a Richmond elementary school. They found that after just 5 weeks of meditation, elementary school students began to behave better in class.

Young researchers from Iran have studied how meditation will affect grades during exams. A total of 107 students took part in the study. One group spent one semester not only studying, but also meditating. As a result, during the exam, those who meditated were half as worried and passed the exam better than the guys from the other group.

3. Helps you get rid of bad habits

Scientists from the University of Texas conducted an experiment among people quitting smoking. They divided the study participants into 2 groups. The first were sent for relaxation, the second for meditation. Participants in the first group smoked as much as before, while the meditators started smoking 60% less already after the second lesson. In them, the researchers noticed increased activity in areas of the brain associated with self-control.

And scientists from Yale University came to the conclusion that smokers who have mastered meditation threw smoke much more likely, than those who received usual treatment.

4. Reduces social anxiety

Researchers at Stanford University recruited 56 participants with social anxiety disorder. They sent the first 25 people to aerobics, the second group of 31 participants to meditation. The groups did not differ in gender, age, ethnicity, or education.

After completing the course, the second group has more classes than the first, the severity of social anxiety symptoms decreased, they began to experience less negative emotions during social contacts.

5. Relieves pain

American scientists have proven that meditation relieves pain. During meditation, areas of the brain that contain many opioid receptors are activated - they are responsible for regulating pain.

In the study, healthy volunteers were given an intravenous injection of an opioid antagonist (a drug that increases the feeling of pain) or a saline solution as a placebo. The researchers compared reactions to intense heat (which was far from pleasant). In volunteers who were injected with the working solution, meditation reduced the intensity of pain compared to the “salt” group.

Also, as a result of the study, scientists came to the conclusion that traditional Treatment of chronic pain in combination with meditation may be more effective.

6. Reduces the risk of heart disease and stroke

A team of scientists from the Institute of Natural Medicine and Prevention at Maharishi University observed changes in the health of people with an increased risk of heart disease.

The scientists sent the first group to a “Health Education Class,” where participants were taught how they could balance their diet to maintain heart health and were given exercise classes. The second group practiced meditation. All study participants received normal medical care and took prescribed medications.

The experiment lasted for 5 years. As a result, scientists discovered that members of the second group have a nearly 50% lower risk of heart attack and stroke than those in the first group.

7. Improves memory

Neuroscientists at Harvard recruited people who had never meditated and gave them magnetic resonance imaging. They were then divided into two groups, one of which was sent to a meditation course.

After 8 weeks of training, scientists found differences in brain volume between the two groups in 5 different areas of the brain. In particular, in meditators, scientists noticed thickening in the left hippocampus, a part of the brain that is responsible for learning, cognition, memory and emotional regulation.

8. Reduces biological age

In the science of aging of living organisms, there are 2 types of age: calendar and biological. And if in order to determine calendar age, scientists only need to look at a passport, then to determine biological age, an in-depth examination of all body systems is required.

A team of scientists led by Professor Robert Wallace (meditation methods.

  • Take a comfortable position. It doesn't have to be the lotus position. You can meditate even while sitting on a chair. The back is straight, the shoulders are straightened, the feet are resting on the floor, the eyes are closed.
  • You can turn on music for meditation: it will help you not to lose track of time.
  • Begin to observe how the inhalation gives way to the exhalation. Don't make any effort - just breathe as usual. To make it easier to concentrate, you can start counting your exhalations. As we inhale we say to ourselves: “...and”, as we exhale – “one”, then as we inhale again: “...and”, as we exhale – “two”. Having counted to four, we begin to count again.
  • Various thoughts and ideas will distract you from counting your exhalations. This is fine. Don't cling to them, just watch them from the outside. If you get distracted, don’t scold yourself - gently switch your attention to your breathing and start counting again.
  • Notice how your body behaves when you breathe. Observe the chest, shoulders and abdomen.
  • When the 2 minutes are up, take a deep breath and exhale. If you want, praise yourself and smile.

You can gradually increase your meditation time. Scientists say that if you meditate for 25 minutes for 3 days, you will almost completely get rid of stress, and over time you will experience other positive effects of meditation described in our article.

Do you practice meditation? Tell us, what changes in your body and in your life did you notice when you started meditating?

For thousands of years, meditation has been used to help the body, mind and spirit expand the existing boundaries of consciousness. Today, meditation is recognized as a stress reliever; it helps lower blood pressure, reduces the effects of negative emotions, and calms the mind. As Deepak Chopra likes to point out, "Meditation is not a way to quiet your mind. It is a way to release the peace and quiet within." What are the benefits of meditating people?

1. They are much happier

Psychologists believe that meditation increases positive emotions, reducing negative ones, and strengthens survival and self-preservation mechanisms. Meditation is one of the tools that some schools and employers are using to improve the well-being of students and workers.

2. They see the world from a creative perspective.

People who meditate regularly report feeling a great creative lift and a feeling of being “directly downloaded” from the Universe after meditating. Where was the song before the composer wrote it? Where was dance before the choreographer invented it? Although scientists cannot find scientific answers to these questions, we do know that people who meditate experience increased creativity and an influx of innovative ideas.

3. They are closely related to each other

When people meditate, they seem to temporarily shut out the world, being alone with their inner energy, but one of the paradoxes of meditation is that by spending time with themselves, they feel a greater sense of connection with others. They often form groups for deeper practices, and they also feel one with all people, seeing them as brothers and sisters or as a piece of the divine in every manifested being.

4. They let go easily

Such people do not hold grudges, fear or pain inside. By taking time to reflect, they use their beneficial ability to be compassionate and empathetic, and spend less time critically berating themselves and judging others.

5. They are less sensitive to pain

When people who experienced chronic pain due to illness were taught meditation, they reported a decrease in pain and an increase in pain tolerance. Meditation actually changes the brain and teaches it to masterfully self-generate positive emotions.

6. They are more durable

People who meditate have a healthier response to stress than non-meditators. Brain scans of meditators show that they use different parts of the brain to cope with stressful situations than other people. Sitting silently for a few minutes every day actually changes the density of gray matter in the right and left hemispheres. This means that when things go wrong, our brains are better able to figure out their own way out of the situation and cope with stress. This will increase many skills necessary for self-preservation.

7. They are guided by intuition.

People who meditate for long periods of time notice that their inner voice, intuition, is more developed than other people. Accordingly, they learn to trust themselves and intuitively make the right decisions that positively affect their destiny.

8. They accept everything as it comes.

Meditators learn to accept everything good and bad that comes into their lives with gratitude or at least acceptance. They note that everything is relative, so there is no need to divide into black and white, bad and good. They don’t ask: “Why do I need this, why me, etc.”, they rather think about “Why do I need this, what does the Universe want for me, etc.”

9. They accept change easily

There is nothing permanent in life, especially in the life of meditating people. By meditating, they change from the inside, which means they change the world around them. Change just means movement and we must strive for this movement to be forward or upward, but not backward (degradation).

10. They know the meaning of life.

By engaging in spirituality and meditation, meaning appears in their life, they know what their soul strives for and what needs to be done for their own realization. Therefore, their lives are more fulfilling and harmonious
